Age-Gender Handicap System

This season the club is awarding the best three performances in each race distance according to the ‘Age-Gender Handicap’. As we are all too aware males in the 20-30 age group nearly always get around a course the quickest and this applies most obviously at the elite level. Elite female triathletes will generally record times 4-5% slower than the fastest males. There is a slight drop off in times for athletes in their thirties and this decline accelerates after age forty for both genders.

The Age-Gender Handicap attempts to take these biological differences into account so that an outstanding performance in say the female 40-45 age-group is balanced according to how the very best in this age group would perform against the very best time for an elite male.

The A-G Handicaps applied for the Club Championship have been based on the results from the World ITU Sprint Distance Championships in London, September 2013. So if you place in this Club award you are up there with the elite performers of the year. We can’t do anything to change your gender or age but we can put your performance into some sort of perspective of what the very best of your age and gender can achieve.
